The Printing Industries of America, Inc./Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (PIA/GATF) expanded its family of process-control tools with the addition of the Altona Test Suite Application Kit. The organizations say it is the first comprehensive set of reference prints, data files, and information for systematic process control to be available worldwide. The kit consists of a set of PDF files specially designed for testing digital output devices, namely proofing solutions for conventional and digital printing systems. The core focus is on a visual comparison of the included reference prints with on-press proofs, off-press proofs, and production prints for the purpose of evaluating the color quality of digital proofing systems and adapting the systems to the standard process. The reference prints support sheet-fed and web-offset printing conditions in accordance with ISO 12647 standards. Additionally, the kit files contain test-form data for offset, continuous-form, newspaper, and gravure publication printing conditions. The test kit is not limited to use with output devices. It can also be used to check the PDF/X-3 compliance and color accuracy for all software and hardware used in a composite PDF workflow system. The Altona Test Suite Application Kit contains 16 reference prints, seven color specimens, 24 Test Suite data files (visual, measure), one Test Suite data file (technical, PDF/X-compliance), 11 characterization data files, 11 ICC profiles, and documentation in English and German.
