Las Vegas is the place where many travel in hopes of finding their fortunes. But from Sept. 26-29, printers from around the world will put their chips on the table at the Specialty Graphic Imaging Association's (SGIA) annual convention. Pre-show events include HAZMAT transportation training and the John M. Crawford golf tournament. The exposition, Golden Image Awards display, and André Schellenberg Gallery open each day at 9:30. The show floor closes at 5 p.m. on Sept. 26-28 and closes at 3 p.m. on Sept. 29. Educational sessions and workshops will be held each day, focusing on imaging techniques and technologies, business matters, and the issues that influence printing businesses.
The morning itinerary for Sept. 26 includes opportunities for attendees to learn about digital imaging, ways to combine different imaging technologies and techniques for garment decoration, methods for job costing, the latest in screen-printing equipment, static and digital signage, and applying profiles to screen- and digital-printing systems. After lunch, and the keynote address, the sessions will focus on direct-to-garment inkjets, business valuation, pairing applications and imaging technologies, digital finishing for textiles, and opportunities in printing with solvent inkjets. The day's workshop will cover garment printing and discuss mesh selection, frames, emulsions, exposure, registration, and press set up.
The sessions on Sept. 27 offer a mix of technical and business topics. In the morning, participants will have a chance to explore subjects such as implementing inkjet technology in screen-printing shops, in-plant inkjet printing, color management for garment screen printing, managing plastisol inks, selecting a flatbed UV inkjet printer, workplace rules and regulations, and more. The morning's workshop will address the production of flocked images for garments. Sessions held after lunch will discuss color management and new ink technologies, interior displays, alternative inks for inkjet printers, international trade, development in UV-curing technology, and more. The afternoon workshop will present information about digital garment printing.
Finishing techniques for digital graphics, computer-to-screen technology, pressure-sensitive films, improving artwork, and job pricing will be among the topics covered in sessions held before lunch on Sept. 28. The morning workshop will help screen printers rejuvinate their garment presses and dryers. Sessions after lunch will examine digital dynamic signage, inkjet printheads, the market for digital art, digital imaging on fabrics, dye sublimation, and more. The workshop will concentrate on printing four-color-process and simulate-process graphics on garments. A workshop on special-effects garment printing will be help in the morning on Sept. 29.
The SGIA Thursday Night Dinner Party will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight on Sept. 28 at the Las Vegas Hilton. The event will feature dinner, dancing, and live music from Vince Vance and the Valiants, who play rock n' roll from the 1950s to the 1990s. SGIA also will spotlight the leaders of the specialty imaging industry and install the 2006-2007 SGIA chairman of the board and present the winners of the Parmele Award and DPI Innovator of the Year.
