3D Systems Prints Custom Prosthetics for Derby the Dog

3D Systems has successfully outfitted Derby the dog with 3D-printed prosthetics, allowing him to run for the first time. Born with a congenital deformity characterized by small forearms and no front paws, Derby was previously only able to get around on soft surfaces.

Tara Anderson, a 3D Systems employee and Derby’s foster mom, sought the help of Derrick Campana, an orthotist at Animal Ortho Care in Chantilly, Virginia, and 3D Systems designers Kevin Atkins and Dave DiPinto. The team used data of Derby’s forearms and a 3D scan of a cup created by Campana to generate the 3D design. They then used Geomagic Freeform, 3D Systems’ digital sculpting platform, to create organic curves matching Derby’s shape. Finally, the design was printed on the ProJet 5500X, a multi-material 3D printer, including rubber cups and a rigid base and spokes.

Derby’s newly adoptive owners, Sherri and Dom Portanova, say the prosthetics are both comfortable and effective. “He runs with Sherri and I every day, at least two to three miles,” says Dom.
