Fashion Institute Students Design Printed Textiles

Kornit and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT)’s third annual student competition, themed “Wearable Water,” challenged Textile/Surface Design scholars to create textiles to be printed on the Kornit Allegro roll-to-roll textile printer.

Judged for their use of the theme, sustainability, marketability, use of digital technology, and overall design aesthetics, the winning students are:

Judged for their use of the theme, sustainability, marketability, use of digital technology, and overall design aesthetics, the winning students are:

• First place: Jihee Che, “The Sulawesi Sea: Save the Coral Reefs”;
• Second place: Janisha Biyanwila, “Water: An Inconvenient Truth”;
• Third place: Rachel McGuire, “Blended Bycatch”;
• And honorable mention: Paige Leonard.

The panel of judges included Melissa Niederman and Joe Castaldo of The Style Council; designer Tom Cody; Nancy Fire of Design Works International; and Paul Borucki, Jim Manelski, and Marco Paul of Kornit North America.

The winning designs will be featured at Kornit’s booth at this September’s SGIA Expo in Las Vegas. FIT’s Fashion Design students will compete later this year using the Textile Design submissions to create finished garments.
