The EU implemented RoHS standardization for electronics waste removal in an effort to curb environmental issues from improper disposal. The directives specify the maximum allowable levels of heavy metals, PBBs (polybrominated biphenyls), PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ether), PentaBDE (pentabromodiphenyl ethers), and OctaBDE (octabrominated diphenyl ether), and various phthalates and bromodiphenyl ethers contained in electrical and electronic equipment.
