New Billboard System Puts Digital Signage on Display

Magink says it’s changing the urban experience with what the company describes as a billboard system that features full color, full motion, low power consumption, and image-quality and visibility enhancements fueled by exposure to the sun and ambient light sources. The magink system is designed to convert almost any surface of any size to a dynamic, full-color digital display.

The technology hinges on screens composed of an organic material derived from cholesterol. These screens are sandwiched between two transparent conductors, which are divided into pixels. Pixel size is 9 mm, and the digital-ink-reflective display supports up to 262,144 colors, a refresh speed of less than 100 milliseconds, and video presentation streams at a demonstrated 50 frames/sec. The billboard offers a 160° viewing angle.

Units are supplied as an integrated solution, including a housing system with front or back service options, all hardware and firmware accessories, and magink proprietary content-management software for single and multiple billboard networks. The displays are available in three standard sizes for outdoor applications: 65 x 102, 89 x 128, and 89 x 208 in. (1.7 x 2.6, 2.3 x 3.3, and 2.3 x 5.3 m). They’re modular and can be retrofitted and customized within the size range.

Magink’s billboards operate on either 110- or 220-VAC. They run on Windows XP and support bitmap, JPEG, GIF, and PNG files, as well as video formats such as MPEG2, MPEG4, DivX, Xvid, and Windows Media. The system has a standard Ethernet interface and can communicate via LAN, DSL, WiFi, and GSM. Authorized users can manipulate graphic content in real time by way of Magink’s software.

Magink currently has deals in place with Clear Channel, JC Decaux, and Lamar Advertising.
