On-the-Job Injuries in 2006 at a Low Rate

The Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA), Fairfax, VA, reported that most respondents to its 2007 Safety Initiatives survey claimed they didn’t have injuries on the job during the previous year and currently have a safety program in place. According to survey responses, safety programs included the use of protective equipment (78.7%), safety rules (70.8%), safety training (58.8%), safety posters (56.2%), and regular safety meetings (46.4%).

The survey appeared on SGIA’s Website from late August through September of this year. Survey questions covered safety programs, injury causes, and production impact. More than 260 participants completed the survey and were located primarily in the US. Other participants represented Canada, Mexico, South Korea, India, Europe, Caribbean, Middle East, and Asia.

“It’s great to see that so many shops have developed safety programs,” says Katy Lellelid, SGIA’s business information associate. “I hope that any company in the industry, with or without these programs, can use the survey results to make their workplace safer.”

A variety of health and safety tools are available from SGIA, including The Right to Know/PPE Training Program DVD and a series of posters and articles highlighting safety issues in the workplace. The survey summary is available online at www.sgia.org, and a full survey report is available at no cost to SGIA members (www.sgia.org, keyword Surveys).
