There are lots of awards for talent at a young age, but one of my favorites is the Tom Frecska Student Printing Competition. Tom O. Frecska was Screen Printing magazine’s editor for many years and earned respect industry-wide for his devotion to the advancement of the screen-printing process and specialty graphics. He passed away unexpectedly in 2009. The Academy of Screen Printing Technology (ASPT) paid tribute to his dedication by renaming its student printing competition in his honor.

This year’s competition has a deadline of July 31, 2012, so please encourage any innovative graphic-arts students you know to participate. Entrants represent secondary (high school and vocational) students and post-secondary (technical school, college, or university) students.
There are 24 categories, and students may enter multiple submissions. The awards are: Award of Excellence for each first place winner within each category; a Certificate of Merit for an honorable mention in each category; and a Best of Show, which includes an ASPT Student Achievement Award and a cash prize of $500 to use for graphic-arts education. Instructors for Best of Show winners also receive $500 to be used to support the school’s graphic-arts program.
How many of you started off as early as high school with talent in graphic arts? Now is the time to support education and to recognize young talent. The ASPT Tom Frecska Student Printing Competition may be just the spark that a talented student needs. For more information, visit http://www.sgia.org/aspt/studentawd.html.
