Xerox and EFI have announced that they will partner in developing a new generation of digital front end (DFE) software for Xerox digital printers. EFI has purchased Xerox’s FreeFlow Print Server as part of the deal; the company will continue to produce and support the platform so customers “do not experience interruptions in sales or service,” according to a release. (EFI reports that the transaction does not impact Xerox workflow packages with a FreeFlow sub-brand name.)

The next step for the partners is the development of a new generation of Fiery DFE software that integrates EFI’s Productivity Suites with Xerox FreeFlow Core and XMPie workflows. The DFE will also integrate with third-party prepress solutions including Agfa Apogee, Heidelberg Prinect, and Kodak Prinergy. The platform will also offer a modern API, through which users can integrate to any customized application.
